The human respiratory system parts and their functions

The human respiratory system is a series of organs responsible for taking in oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide. The main organs of the respiratory system are the lungs, which are responsible for gas exchange. The respiratory system also includes the trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoli.

The respiratory process begins when you inhale, or breathe in. Air enters the body through the nose or mouth and passes through the pharynx (throat) and larynx (voice box). The larynx contains the vocal cords, which produce sound when they vibrate.

From the larynx, air passes through the trachea (windpipe) and into the bronchi. The bronchi are tubes that branch off from the trachea and lead to the lungs. The bronchi further divide into smaller tubes called bronchioles.

At the end of the bronchioles are tiny, balloon-like structures called alveoli. It is in the alveoli where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place. Oxygen from the air passes through the walls of the alveoli and into the bloodstream, while carbon dioxide in the bloodstream passes into the alveoli to be exhaled out of the body.

The respiratory system also includes muscles that help with breathing, such as the diaphragm and intercostal muscles. The diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle located at the bottom of the ribcage that contracts and relaxes to help move air in and out of the lungs. The intercostal muscles are located between the ribs and help lift the ribcage to expand the lungs during inhalation.
