The heart in birds is big and similar to the heart of mammals. Both heart chambers are four-chambered, with one pump pumping oxygen-rich blood to the lungs and another pump pumping blood from the tissues back into the lungs. The lungs supply oxygen to the rest of the body, and the circulatory system of a bird is equipped to handle the rigors of flight. Its four chambers are divided into two distinct regions: the atria and the ventricles.

Respiratory system

If you've ever watched a bird, you've likely noticed that the way they breathe is different from us. Birds breathe through the trachea, a hollow tube surrounded by cartilage rings. This loop also accommodates other airways and may contribute to sound production. It's located in the bird's chest. Once inside, the trachea splits into two smaller tubes called primary bronchi. These tubes branch out into the right and left lungs.


The carpometacarpus, or hand bone, in birds is formed by the fusion of the metacarpals and carpal bones, the two bones on each wrist. In birds, the carpometacarpus is a small bone and may not be visible if the bird is flightless. It is also the part of the bird's skeleton that forms the tip of its wing, attached to the phalanx bones.

Legs and toes

Some birds have long legs that enable them to stand in deep puddles of water while other have short webbed feet that enable them to swim in water while afloat. Their feed also contains toes with fingernails that vary depending on the feeding habits of the bird. Predatory birds tend to have strong and sharp nails. Birds like chicken that need to scratch the ground have short and sharp nails that serve this purpose.
