A Lesson For Kids On Amphibians

Amphibians Frog Game

Amphibians are a diverse group of animals that live in many habitats. In the first stages of their lives, these creatures breathe through gills in the front of their mouths and have no lungs. They breathe through gills and then later develop lungs during metamorphosis. The three groups of amphibians are the Anura, Urodela, and Caudata and are divided into two subgroups according to their size.

Amphibians share characteristics of reptiles and fish, however, they live on land and sometimes in water. They are cold-blooded animals that regulate their body temperature depending on their environment. These animals have delicate, scaleless skin and live near freshwater bodies of water. Amphibians have a range of life forms, including frogs, salamanders, toads, and turtles. Their different environments and diets make them versatile creatures that are easy to find.

Amphibians lay jelly-coated eggs called spawn. These are often found in standing freshwater among plants. The spawn develops into tadpoles, which have legs and lungs. Adult amphibians spend most of their lives on land, returning to the water only to reproduce in the spring. Amphibians not only form new species, but also migrate to new areas to reproduce.

Amphibians have different lifestyles and diets. Most of these creatures spend their entire lives on land and can even eat animals that do not live in water. Cane toads, for example, are known to eat plants and other non-living creatures. Other amphibians, such as frogs and other small aquatic organisms, also feed on insects.

A Frog as an example of an amphibian:
Several characteristics distinguish frogs from other organisms. Its semi-permeable skin allows it to live in a variety of habitats. Although they prefer moist environments, they have evolved to develop special adaptations for living in drier environments. Frogs are also known to make a variety of sounds to attract mates and ward off predators. These amphibians also have a wide variety of behaviors.
For example, the wood frog is a nocturnal species that lives in the northern hemisphere. It can survive when 65 percent of its body is frozen because the glucose in its blood concentrates in its vital organs. During the cold winter months, the wood frog can live in a dry climate, but it waits seven years for rain. It can hide underground and wrap itself in a transparent cocoon to avoid freezing to death. During the rainy season, the female frog lays between two and more than 50,000 eggs.
The frogs lay their eggs in the water and metamorphose to adulthood. In the wild, they feed on small invertebrates. Frogs are an important food source for many ecosystems. Birds and many other predators eat frogs when they are hunting.
