  • Dugong

The dugong is one of the most famous marine mammals and is the only survivor of the species' genus, Sirenia. Its genus name was derived from the sirens of Greek mythology. The most famous member of the Sirenia family, Steller's sea cow, lived in the subarctic Bering Sea. Other species of Sirenia have also been given the common name sea cow, but dugongs are the only living species in the family.

  • Manatee

The manatee and sea cow are two of the world's largest mammals. These aquatic mammals live in the coastal waters of the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico, where they graze and spend up to 8 hours a day swimming. They are highly endangered due to the destruction of their habitat and resulting deaths from boat collisions. In captivity, manatees live up to 60 years. Manatees are born underwater after a 12 to 14-month gestation period and are guided to the surface by their mother. The calves stay close to their mother for two years, depending on the species.

  • Sea Cow

A manatee and a sea cow share similar characteristics. These two mammals both live in coastal waters and are herbivores. While both species have their own habitats, manatees prefer to live in colder waters. Historically, they were hunted by humans for their meat and skin. Nowadays, though, humans are finding manatees and sea cows less of a threat. There are many ways to help protect these mammals from extinction.

  • Differences

Although manatees and dugongs share similar characteristics, the two are different species. Although both sea cows and dugongs belong to the sirenian animal order, they are different from one another in some respects. This article will explore the differences between these two animals and provide some interesting information about both. If you are interested in learning more about these amazing sea mammals, read on for more information.

  • Threats

While sea cows are extinct in the wild, the West Indian Manatee is on the endangered species list. Their recovery has been hampered by boat collisions. Boat impacts are the primary cause of manatee deaths, including impacts from propellers and the lower unit of motors. Additionally, the loss of warm-water habitat is a long-term threat to manatees. Manatees cannot regulate their body temperature in cold water.

  • Care

The accelerated demise of Florida's manatee population has conservationists concerned. In order to save the sea cows, scientists are trying new ways to help them survive. Miles O'Brien spoke to two experts on the subject, Patrick Rose, executive director of the Save the Manatee Club in Maitland, Florida, and Cynthia Stringfield, senior vice president for animal health, conservation, and education at ZooTampa in Tampa.

  • Location

The manatee and the sea cow are both marine mammals. They are similar in size and shape to cows, with a slow, grazing lifestyle. They feed on grasses that look appetizing to them, and they are largely confined to shallow waters. But unlike their cow cousins, manatees are not as big as they once were, and this difference makes them even more interesting to observe and study.
