Teach Kids How to Make a Tin Can Phone teach kids how to make a tin telephone
Tin can phones have been a very cool thing to make for years. It is a very fun experiment for kids and can even teach them a thing or two about making their own projects with everyday common items. Making tin can cups is very simple and something you can do the next time you have a sleepover with your friends. All you need to get started are a few items:

  • 2 paper cups
  • A sharp pencil or sewing needle (with adult supervision) in order to poke the holes in the cup
  • String (such as from a kite or fishing pole)

Once you have gathered these materials, you are ready to make your very own tin cup with your friends!
Making Your Phone
The first thing you should do is cut a long piece of string. If you wanted, you can even play with different lengths to get the size you want but it is probably best to keep it no more than about 60 feet. After that, you should then poke a small hole in the bottom of both of the cups. Just make the holes big enough for the strings to fit through. Then, thread the string through each cup and tie knots at each end to stop it pulling through the cup. You have to make sure your knots are big enough so when you pull the string, it will not go through the hole in the cup. After that, you and your friend should go to different spots of the room or building and make sure that the string is long and tight. If there is any looseness or slack in the string, it will not work. Go as far as you need to and make sure you pull as hard as you can and it is tight! One person should then talk into the cup while the other person puts their ear to it. If you can hear each other, you have made your very own tin can phone!
Tin Can Phones at Home
This is a very fun and cool experiment to do with your friends as it shows how sound vibrations work and how your voice travels in the air! There is nothing cooler than that and you can even make it with other friends and family members. The next time you are at home, try it out with your mom and dad and have a tin can phone conversation about anything in the world you want !
