How to Make A Tropical Rainforest Ecosystem Project For Kids

Learning about different ecosystems will help you to figure out how important keeping these places around is. In this project, you’ll be learning about the tropical rainforest ecosystem.
Materials

  • A shoebox or a box of similar size. Tropical Ecosystem Rainforest project for kids
  • A small box.
  • A4 or Letter size card stock
  • Green crepe paper
  • Green acrylic paint
  • Brown construction paper
  • Crayons or colored pencils
  • Paint brush
  • White glue
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Small rocks and twigs
  • Hot glue gun (and an adult to help)

Procedure

  • Take your shoebox or a box of similar size, don’t cut off the lid. You’re going to want to place the box on the small end so you have room to put in rainforest trees. Ask an adult to help you, to keep the lid at a 90-degree angle, attach your small box to the bottom of the hinge with the hot glue gun.
  • You can paint your box with either acrylic paint or poster paint, but acrylic paint will give it a glossy look. For the inside, use green. You can paint some trees in the background if you want to. Paint the outside of the box however you’d like.
  • With your brown construction paper, if you cut out a rectangular section it will make half a tree. The paper should be at least an inch taller than your box. You’ll need to have tabs to glue your trees as well, one side and at the bottom of the tree, which you can cut excess paper around ½ from two edges of your paper tree so you have a place to put them. Starting at the side tab, draw half of your tree. Cut out the tree and fold the bottom and side tab to create a crease, then cut about an inch from the top and bottom of the side tab. The middle of the box can hold a whole tree, but these half trees will be good to take up space if your box.
  • To attach the trees, just glue the bottom tabs and side tabs, and glue any branches to the top of the box.
  • To add leaves, cut out strips of green crepe paper and crumble them a bit. Glue these to the branches and around the edge of the box. Start at the back of the box and work forwards.
  • You can create ferns, philodendrons, and other plants found in the rainforest by using crepe paper or plain paper, get some help from an adult and a hot glue gun.
  • Make sure to add some animals you’d find in the rainforest. You can draw them, print them, or make them out of paper.
  • Make sure you secure your animals inside the box so they don’t fall out.
  • Add in details like pebbles, twigs, and leaves. You can use green crepe paper to make vines for your rainforest! Twirl the crepe paper around a pencil to make it curly and then glue the end of the vine to a branch or the ceiling of the box. Science fair project for 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th grade students.
